Abstract:【Objective】 To explore the clinical efficacy of intensity-modulated radiation therapy combined with acetylcysteine in the treatment of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).【Methods】 In this study, a total of 80 patients with NSCLC admitted in our hospital from August 2014 to December 2015, were divided into two groups on the basis of random number table method, with 40 cases in each group. The control group was administrated with solely intensity-modulated radiation therapy, while the treatment group was administrated with intensity-modulated radiation therapy in combination with acetylcysteine. The incidence of radiation pneumonitis, changes of serum biological markers [glutathione (GSH), interleukin (IL) -6, transforming growth factor (TGF) -β, type II alveolar cell surface antigen (KL-6)], and Karnofsky performance status (KPS) scores at different time points before and after the therapy were compared between the two groups.【Results】 The incidence of radiation pneumonitis in the treatment group was 15.00% (6/40), which was significantly lower than that in the control group 40.00% (16/40)(P<0.05). The serum GSH levels in the observation group at the end of radiotherapy and 1 and 3 months after radiotherapy were significantly higher than those in the control group. The serum levels of IL-6, TGF-β and KL-6 were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.05). The KPS scores at the end of radiotherapy and 1 and 3 months after radiotherapy were significantly increased in the observation group compared with the control group (P<0.05).【Conclusion】 In the treatment of NSCLC, the combination of intensity modulated radiation therapy and acetylcysteine proves to be effective in preventing radiation pneumonitis, enhancing body's antioxidation capacity, reducing the irradiation-induced lung injury and improving life quality.
