Abstract:【Objective】 To investigate the relationship of erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR),C-reactive protein (CRP) and fecal white blood cell count (WBC) with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) for evaluating the value of disease staging prediction. 【Methods】 A total of 154 patients with UC from June 2019 to August 2021 in our hospital were selected as the research subjects. Patients were divided into the remission group,the mild activity group,the moderate activity group,and the severe activity group according to the Southerland Disease Activity Index (DAI). The incidence of SIBO was determined by lactulose hydrogen breath test (LHBT). The erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR),C-reactive protein (CRP),fecal white blood cell count (WBC) and intestinal mucosal barrier function indexes [diamine oxidase (DAO ) bacterial endotoxin (LPS),D-lactic acid] levels were measured. The correlation of ESR,CRP,fecal white blood cell count with DAI score,SIBO status and intestinal barrier function at admission was analyzed. 【Results】 The comparison of ESR,CRP,fecal white blood cell count,and DAI scores at admission among the four groups showed the order of the severe activity group>the moderate activity group > the light activity group > the remission group,which were statistically significant difference (P<0.05). The comparison of DAO and LPS among the four groups of patients at admission showed that the severe activity group>the moderate activity group>the mild activity group>the remission group,with a statistically significant difference (P<0.05). There was no statistically significant difference in D-lactate levels among the four groups of patients at admission (P>0.05). The levels of ESR,CRP,and fecal white blood cell count in the SIBO positive groups were higher than those in the SIBO negative groups at admission,with statistical significance (P<0.05). ESR,CRP,fecal white blood cell count at admission were positively correlated with SDAI score,LPS,DAO,and SIBO (P<0.05). 【Conclusion】 The levels of ESR,CRP,and fecal white blood cell count are significantly correlated with the stage of UC patients and the occurrence of SIBO,which can assist in early clinical diagnosis of SIBO and provide reference for evaluating disease stage.
