Abstract:【Objective】To explore the correlation between serum cystatin C (cys C) and brain natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels and cardiac function and prognosis in elderly hypertensive patients. 【Methods】A total of 120 elderly hypertensive patients admitted to our hospital from September 2020 to June 2023 were selected. All patients were followed up for 3 years and divided into a good prognosis group (n=74) and a poor prognosis group (n=46) according to whether major adverse cardiovascular events occurred during follow-up. Meanwhile, 57 healthy volunteers who underwent physical examination in our hospital during the same period were selected as the control group. Serum cys C and BNP levels, as well as cardiac function indexes [left ventricular ejection fraction(LVEF),left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD), left ventricular end-systolic diameter (LVESD), left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF), 6-minute walk distance (6MWD)] were compared among the three groups. Pearson correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the correlation between serum cys C and BNP levels and prognosis; Spearman correlation analysis was used to analyze the correlation between serum cys C and BNP levels and cardiac function. 【Results】The serum cys C and BNP levels in the poor prognosis group were higher than those in the control group and the good prognosis group, with statistically significant differences (P<0.05). LVEDD and LVESD in the poor prognosis group were significantly higher than those in the control group and the good prognosis group, while LVEF and 6MWD were significantly lower than those in the control group and the good prognosis group, with statistically significant differences (mean P<0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that serum cys C and BNP levels were positively correlated with poor prognosis (r=0.464, 0.989; all P<0.05). Spearman correlation analysis showed that serum cys C and BNP levels were significantly correlated with cardiac function indexes (LVEDD, LVESD, LVEF, 6MWD) in elderly hypertensive patients (all P<0.05). 【Conclusion】Serum cys C and BNP levels are abnormally elevated in elderly hypertensive patients, and they can be used as important indicators to evaluate cardiac function and prognosis in elderly hypertensive patients.
