Abstract:【Objective】To explore the correlation between the severity of acute upper respiratory infection and the content of interleukin-8 (IL-8) and neutrophils in nasal lavage fluid. 【Methods】A total of 784 patients with acute upper respiratory tract infection were included and the contents of IL-8 and neutrophils in nasal lavage fluid were detected. The severity of upper respiratory tract infection was assessed by the Wisconsin wurss-21 survey. According to wurss-21 scores, the patients were divided into three groups: mild, moderate and severe. The content of IL-8 and neutrophils from the three groups were compared, and their relationship with the severity of acute upper respiratory tract infection was also conducted. 【Results】Of 784 patients, 137 were mild, 339 were moderate, and 308 were severe. The content of Il-8 and neutrophils were positively correlated with the severity of acute upper respiratory tract infection. Correlation analysis showed that IL-8 and neutrophils were significantly positively correlated with the severity of acute upper respiratory tract infection (r=0.32, P=0.001; r=0.28, P=0.002). Il-8 and neutrophils were associated with nasal symptom severity of acute upper respiratory tract infection symptoms, including running nose (r=0.13,P=0.001;r=0.18,P=0.003), nasal obstruction (r=0.15,P=0.003; r=0.14,P=0.028), sneezing (r=0.02,P=0.001;r=0.01,P=0.031)and hoarseness (r=0.02,P= 0.017); r=0.03,P=0.034). 【Conclusion】Il-8 and neutrophils are associated with the severity of nasal symptoms during acute respiratory infection. Thus can be used as a monitoring indicator for the severity of acute upper respiratory tract infections.
