Abstract:【Objective】To explore the association of memory impairment in neurosyphilis patients with levels of inflammatory cytokines and serum lipids. 【Methods】A total of 114 patients with neurosyphilis were in group A and 120 healthy volunteers as controls were in group B. The psychological background and memory ability of the two groups were compared. According to the memory function impairment, 114 syphilis patients were divided into group A1 (with memory impairment) and group A2 (without impairment) . Levels of inflammatory cytokines and serum lipids were compared in both groups. 【Results】The scores of mini-mental state scale (MMSE), Digital Spanning Test (DS) and Auditory Words Learning Test (AWLT) of group A were significantly lower than those of group B (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in the scores of verbal fluency test (VFT) between group A and group B (P>0.05). The time-based and event-based memory scores of group A were significantly lower than those of group B, and the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). The levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in group A1were significantly higher than those in group A2; while the level of IL-10 of A1 group was significantly lower than that of A2 group (P<0.05). Serum total cholesterol (TC), glyceryl triglyceride (TG) and low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) levels were significantly higher in group A1 than in group B and A2 (P<0.05). There were no significant differences in the levels of HDL-C, ApoA, and ApoB among all groups (P>0.05). 【Conclusion】The mental and memory abilities of syphilis patients are significantly impaired compared to the normal population, and memory impairment is associated with inflammatory factor levels and lipid metabolism.
