Abstract  【Objective】To investigate the effect of acceptance and commitment therapy on the negative emotions and coping styles of patients with depression. 【Methods】A total of 2659 patients with depression from January 2015 to July 2017 were randomly divided into the observation group (n=1350) and the control group (n=1309). Patients in both groups were given antidepressant and anti-anxiety drugs. The control group received conventional nursing interventions including health education, psychological nursing and cognitive interventions. The observation group received acceptance and commitment therapy in addition to treatments in the control group. After 6 months of follow-up, negative emotion and coping styles were assessed using the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS) and the Coping Style Questionnaire (CSQ). 【Results】The SAS and SDS scores in the observation group were significantly lower than those in the control group (P<0.01). The ability of seeking help, problem solving and rationalization scores in the observation group were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.01); and self-reproach, withdrawal, and illusion were significantly lower than in the control group (P<0.05). 【Conclusion】Acceptance and commitment therapy can help relieve anxiety and depression, avoid negative coping behaviors, and promote the development of positive coping behaviors in patients with depression.
