Relationship of Oxidative Stress,BDNF,and IGF-1 Levels with Severity of Epilepsy |

Abstract 【Objective】 To explore the relationship of the severity of epileptic seizures with the levels of oxidative stress,brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF),and insulin like growth factor (IGF-1). 【Methods】 According to the severity of seizures,198 patients with epilepsy admitted to our hospital were divided into the mild group of 71 cases,the moderate group of 74 cases,and the severe group of 53 cases. Meanwhile,68 healthy individuals who underwent physical examination at the same time in our hospital were selected as the control group. The general data and serum oxidative stress indicators (MDA,CAT,SOD,T-AOC),as well as serum BDNF and IGF-1 levels were measured and compared among the four groups. We analyzed the correlation between the levels of various indicators and the severity of epilepsy in patients with different grades of epilepsy to show the relationship of severity of epilepsy with serum levels of MDA,CAT,SOD,T-AOC,BDNF,IGF-1. 【Results】 The levels of serum CAT,SOD and T-AOC in patients with epilepsy of different grades were significantly lower than those in the control group,while the level of MDA was significantly higher than that in the control group. As the severity of the disease increased,the levels of CAT,SOD,and T-AOC showed a downward trend,while the level of MDA showed a increase trend (all P<0.05). Serum BDNF level in patients with epilepsy of different severities was significantly lower than that in the control group,while IGF-1 level was significantly higher than that in the control group. As the severity of the disease increased,BDNF tended to decrease,while IGF-1 tended to increase (all P<0.05). Pearson correlation analysis showed that levels of serum CAT,SOD,T-AOC,and BDNF were negatively correlated with the severity of the disease (P<0.05),while MDA and IGF-1 levels were positively correlated with the severity of the disease (P<0.05). BDNF level was negatively correlated with MDA level,while it was positively correlated with CAT,SOD,and T-AOC levels. The level of IGF-1 was positively correlated with MDA level,and it was negatively correlated with CAT,SOD,and T-AOC levels (P<0.05). 【Conclusion】 There are significant differences in the levels of oxidative stress,BDNF,IGF-1,and BDNF,IGF-1 in epileptic patients with different severity of illness. The disease severity is significant correlation to the levels of oxidative stress,BDNF and IGF-1 in epileptic patients.
