| Observation on Pathological Down-staging and the Tolerance of Patients with Colorectal Cancer Treated by Modified Short-course Radiotherapy |

Abstract 【Objective】To explore the effect of modified short course radiotherapy on pathological stage and patient tolerance in the treatment of colorectal cancer.【Methods】Seventy-four patients with colorectal cancer in our hospital were randomized into the observation group and the control group. Both groups were treated with neoadjuvant radiotherapy and chemotherapy, but the observation group was treated with modified short-course radiotherapy and the control group was treated with routine radiotherapy. Changes of clinical staging were compared between the two groups in 3 months postoperativly. Length of hospital stay and costs were recorded, and the radiotherapy related adverse reactions were evaluated to assess the patient's tolerance.【Results】There was a significant decrease in the staging of the two groups of patients after radiotherapy, and the difference was significant compared with that before the intervention (P<0.05). However, there were no significant differences between the two groups (P>0.05); Length of hospital stay, costs of radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and other expenses in the observation group were significantly lower than those in control group (P<0.05); There were no significant differences in the incidence rate and grade of bone marrow suppression, radiation dermatitis and radiation enteritis between the two groups (P>0.05).【Conclusion】The short-term down-staging rate and curative effects of modified short-course radiotherapy are similar to those of routine radiotherapy, and does not increase the incidence rates of adverse reactions induced by radiotherapy. It can shorten the length of hospital stay, and reduce financial burden of patients. It has high clinical application value.
