| Comparison of the Effects between Laparoscopic and Open Surgery in the Treatment of Elderly Patients with Rectal Cancer |

Abstract 【Objective】To compare the long-term curative effect and the influence on the quality of life between laparoscopic surgery and open surgery in the treatment of elderly patients with rectal cancer. 【Methods】Ninety-six patients with rectal cancer were randomized into two group. The observation group was treated with laparoscopic radical resection of rectal cancer, while the control group was treated with open surgery. The surgical effect, 3 months postoperative quality of life score, and follow-up survival rate of patients was compared between the two groups. 【Results】The intraoperative blood loss, off-bed time, and length of hospitalization of the observation group patients were significantly better than those of control group (P<0.05). The total incidence of complications in the observation group (6.25%) was significantly lower than that in the control group (25.00%) (P<0.05). The scores of overall health, physical function, pain, mental health, and social function in the observation group patient 3 months after surgery were significantly higher than those in the control group (P<0.05). However, there was no significant difference in the 1-year and 3-year survival rates between the observation group and the control group (P>0.05). 【Conclusion】 The operation times and long-term effects of laparoscopic and open surgery in the treatment of rectal cancer are similar. However, laparoscopic surgery allows for less intraoperative blood loss, quicker postoperative recovery, and fewer complications. It can significantly improve the postoperative quality of life of patients.
