Cognitive Function Comparison between Mirtazapine and Sertraline in First-episode Major Depression Treatment |

Abstract 【Objective】To compare the efficacy of mirtazapine and sertraline on the cognitive function in first-episode depression patients. 【Method】A total of 198 first-episode major depression patients were randomly assigned to mirtazapine (n=98)or sertraline (n=100)for 6 weeks. The efficacies of patients were assessed by HAMD (Hamilton Depression Scale) and the cognitive functions were evaluated with Wisconsin card sorting test(WCST), trail marking test(TMT), verbal fluency task(VF), digital symbol and digital span【Results】 After 6 weeks of treatment, the effective rate of mirtazapine and sertraline were respectively 82.7% and 81.0%. There was no significant difference between two groups(P>0.05). After 6-weeks treatment, the two group patients had improvement in WSCT (in terms of right response numbers, classification, errors, continuous errors), reduced TMT times, and increased VF plus numbers and digital symbol(P<0.05). However, the digital span in two group patients had not obvious improvement after treatment(P>0.05). In the 6th weekend of treatment, the WSCT random errors and TMT-A times in the mirtazapine group were significantly lower than in the sertraline group(P<0.05). The VF numbers in the mirtazapine group were significantly higher than sertraline group(P<0.05). 【Conclusion】 Mirtazapine is as effective as sertraline, and is superior in improving cognitive functions than sertraline.
