Abstract [Obj ective]To design a simple and accurate X-ray aiming device for free-hand distal locking screw placement of femoral intramedullary nail and to verify clinical efficacy.[Methods]The aiming device for free-hand distal locking screw placement was self designed, made and applied in clinical practice.Totally 28 patients with femoral shaft fracture who failed to distal locking screw with traditional aiming device in orthopedic department of our hospital from Oct.2012 to Oct.2013 were randomly divided into two groups.Group A underwent free-hand nail placement by self-made aiming device, while group B underwent nail placement without the aiming device for fluoroscopy. The locking operation time, blood loss and fluoroscopy times were compared between two groups.[Results]The locking operation time, blood loss and fluoroscopy times of group A were markedly less than those of group B,and there was significant difference(P<0.05).[Conclusion]This aiming device is simple in struc-ture,accurate in positioning and convenient in application. Therefore,it is a good choice as an effective remedy method of nail placement after the failure of traditional distal locking screw placement of femoral intramedullary nail.
