Abstract:【Objective】 To explore the relationship between iron overload and thyroid function in children with thalassemia . 【Methods】 From June 2014 to June 2017, 118 children with thalassemia were selected to detect serum ferritin (SF), free triiodothyronine (FT3) and serum free thyroid hormone (FT4). The level of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) was observed and the relationship between iron overload and hypothyroidism was analyzed.【Results】 Among the 118 children with thalassemia who received regular blood transfusion and iron removal, 53 had no iron overload (44.92%), 65 had iron overload (55.08%), and the serum FT3 ,FT4 of iron overload children was significantly lower than that of non-iron overload children. The prevalence of hypothyroidism was significantly higher than that of children without iron overload ( P < 0.05).【Conclusion】 Children with thalassemia may be accompanied by iron overload after transfusion, and iron overload may increase the incidence of complications of hypothyroidism to a certain extent.
