Abstract:【Objective】To explore the clinical effect of blood glucose monitoring on the prognosis of elderly patients that have undergone esophageal cancer operation. 【Methods】A total of eighty-two patients with esophageal cancer surgery in elderly patients with high blood glucose from June 2011 to June 2016 in our hospital were recruited as the research subject. They were randomly divided into the observation group and the control group, with 41 cases in each. Patients in the observation group received blood glucose monitoring and management to put blood glucose under control, while patients in the control group only received routine management. Blood glucose, white blood cell, C reactive protein (CRP), incision drainage and anastomotic leakage, complications, and mortality were recorded. 【Results】The incidence of postoperative complications was 14.63% (6/41) in the observation group, which was significantly lower than that in the control group (63.41%, 26/41). There were no deaths in the observation group and 2 cases of death in the control group. The incisional drainage of the observation group was better than that of the control group. The levels of blood glucose, CRP and white blood cells in the observation group were lower than those in the observation group; the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05).【Conclusion】Monitoring of blood glucose has a significant impact on the prognosis of elderly esophageal cancer patients with high blood glucose level. It can significantly reduce the incidence of complications and deaths in elderly patients with hyperglycemia.
